Operator manual for the workbench. Every inner tab is below, with a screenshot taken from the instrument. The worked example is an 80 mm example HE cylinder created on Payload Setup. The comparison baseline is the locked M67 grenade on Examples. Catalogue rows are class examples you calibrate, not fielded systems.

Read the status chip on every screen: payload name, Gurney V, standoff, TNT-equivalent, nose mechanism, and pose. Physics, Engagement, Target, Catalogue, Compare, and the Technical Data Package all read that chip. Lab (reset, import, regression) stays folded on Overview; it is not the operator path.

Access is restricted. Named U.S. Person seats, and eligible foreign persons only through an organization under a U.S. government approval. See Access Eligibility. Output is an engineering estimate, not a certified JMEM and not a range-safety determination. Range clearance stays with the certifying authority.

Before the instrument

  1. Email for a seat
  2. Approval
  3. Workbench
  4. Save

Email for a seat, complete screening, complete the video identity check, wait for a written memo. After approval, open Workbench. Workbench is $20,000 / year. The Technical Data Package add-on is $5,000 / year and unlocks the ZIP plus Compare. Invoice after the named seat is approved. There is no card checkout.

01 Overview

Read the map before you change a number.

Overview is the table of contents: Setup, Physics, Engagement, Target, Catalogue, Compare, and the Technical Data Package. Each card opens that inner tab. Provenance under the cards names the method: Gurney, Kinney–Graham, THOR, Forrestal / Tate, P–i, fly-out MSD, RED / CDE. Lab stays folded.

02 Examples

Load a locked benchmark, then leave it locked.

Four published-band checks stay in the workbench: 155 mm M107, 120 mm HE mortar, Mk 82 500-lb GP bomb, and M67 grenade. The envelope table must match the article the example is built from. The performance table is workbench versus a published number — Gurney, blast, area of effect, plate perforation — where one exists. Matching the envelope only proves the geometry solve reads the article. The same checks are public at Benchmarks.

  1. 01Open Examples. Scroll to M67 fragmentation grenade.
  2. 02Read envelope (inputs) then performance (workbench vs published).
  3. 03Press Load this example if the status chip is not already M67. Geometry stays locked.
  4. 04Keep M67 as the comparison round. The 80 mm example HE is a separate payload you create next.

03 Setup

Describe the round the rest of the tool will read.

Materials is the live library: structural target metals and explosive fills. Edit a cell and every tab that uses that name updates. You rarely need it unless you are adding a fill.

Payload Setup is the round. Charge, case, fragment treatment, nose, and standoff. Derived source terms (C, M, Gurney V, TNT equivalent, fragment count) update as you type.

  1. 01Payload Setup → New. Name it 80 mm example HE.
  2. 02Cylinder, diameter 3.15 in (80 mm), length about 10 in, case 0.2 in, Comp B, steel, Mott natural fragments, metal fraction 0.55.
  3. 03Fixed standoff 8 m so later tabs share a clean range without CEP growth.
  4. 04Leave nose as fragmenting end cap unless you are running EFP / SC or an ogive projectile.
  5. 05Confirm the status chip reads 80 mm example HE before leaving the tab.

04 Physics

Score each mechanism on the active payload.

Physics tabs read the status chip. Gurney, Blast, and THOR always have something to say for this cylinder. EFP / SC and Projectile Pen stay quiet until the nose calls for them. Structural and Local blast are P–i reads against a surrogate shell or bay.

Gurney

Launch velocity from C/M and the shell family you set. For a cylinder that is Lloyd with Huang rarefaction along the wall. The yellow marker is this payload. Sliders explore D, L, and √2E without writing back to Setup until you intend to.

Blast

Kinney–Graham overpressure and impulse versus scaled distance Z. Kingery–Bulmash is the dashed check. Ground burst applies the 1.8 W hemispherical factor. The marker is Z at the payload standoff.

THOR

Fragment residual velocity and mass after a plate. Plate metal and thickness default from the Effects surrogate. Strike V at range uses the same drag ODE as Fly-out.

EFP / SC and Projectile Pen

EFP / SC opens when Nose mechanism is an EFP slug or a shaped-charge jet. Projectile Pen opens for an ogive. The 80 mm example HE starts as a flat-plate end cap, so those tabs stay quiet until you change the nose. Set Nose to EFP slug to get the hydrodynamic depth chart below. Load 155 mm M107 for the Forrestal / Tate ogive chart.

Structural and Local blast

Structural is the rupture hyperbola for a surrogate shell (P–i). Local blast is the parallel bay / face / joint path. Both overlay the Kinney load at the payload standoff. Switch the status chip back to 80 mm example HE after the M107 ogive shot.

05 Engagement

Put the same round in the air.

Soft Effects, Fly-out, hazard distances, and Effects share the payload pose (yaw / pitch / roll / height) except where a tab says otherwise. Fly-out is a static range burst. Incoming platform speed is Strike V on Target, not a hidden add-on here.

Soft Effects

Incident overpressure versus range against open injury thresholds (glass, eardrum, lung, lethality). The vertical marker is the payload standoff. Sync R and W from the active payload if you have been exploring.

Fly-out

Integrates the fragment inventory with quadratic drag, Mach Cd, and gravity. Elevation is ground range versus height. Wheel or +/− zooms, drag pans, double-click or 1:1 resets. Hazardous traces are KE ≥ 79 J. MSD is the p90 of those impacts. Reload launch from payload if you edited Gurney or Taylor angle.

Hazard distances

The JFIRE tab draws RED- and MSD-style rings computed from this payload — engineering estimates, not table values from a publication. Danger close is a call-for-fire warning, not a distance. CDE is the furthest-reaching mechanism. You can download a KMZ for Google Earth; range clearance is still the certifying authority’s.

Effects

3-D burst scene. Place boxes, cylinders, spheres; drive standoff from the 3-D pose if the box is ticked. Overlays include Taylor band, fragment hits, soft R, and RED / MSD. This pose is not the Compare attitude.

06 Target

Aim at a class example, then sweep the look.

Solid model is a BRL-CAD-shaped class at true size. Parametric study holds range and Strike V and sweeps aspect × elevation. Height of burst holds the approach and sweeps burst range × CEP. Pd is an engineering estimate — not AJEM, not a certified Pk. Strike V on these tabs is added along the look; Fly-out stays a static burst.

  2. 02Parametric study: set Range R and Strike V. Press Run study. Read the Pd surface.
  3. 03Height of burst: set aspect and elevation. Press Run study. Read Pd versus burst range.

07 Catalogue

The same round against every class example.

Catalogue sweeps the active payload across ten class examples, plus any row you add. Scroll the table. Dominance is the mechanism with the lowest platform-count. Add a row when a range or a platform shop needs its own surrogate in the same solve. Restore built-ins if an edit went wrong.

08 Compare

80 mm example HE against the M67.

Compare is part of the Technical Data Package add-on. Left is the selected payload and changes the rest of the workbench. Right is review-only. Shared standoff R is for blast / structural / soft takeaways. Fly-out and RED / MSD use each payload’s own launch.

  1. 01Left: 80 mm example HE. Right: M67 fragmentation grenade (example).
  2. 02Set Compare at R if you want a common blast range that is not either native standoff.
  3. 03Read Gurney, Blast, THOR, then scroll to Fly-out.
  4. 04On the elevation twins: wheel or +/− to zoom, drag to pan, 1:1 or double-click to reset. Both plots share the window.
  5. 05Hazard-distance plans sit on a shared axis. Single Target engagement is one parametric shot at a pose you set here — not the Effects pose.
